Faculty of Marine Sciences launched a community outreach initiative to raise awareness about sharks with Fakieh Aquarium

The Faculty of Marine Sciences at King Abdulaziz University launched a community outreach initiative to raise awareness about sharks. Hosted by Sea Wonders Company (Fakieh Aquarium), the initiative aims to promote scientific understanding of these marine animals, correct common misconceptions about them, and highlight their importance in maintaining ecological balance and the sustainability of marine ecosystems in the Red Sea.

The exhibition accompanying the initiative was inaugurated by Dr. Mohammad Binsarhan, Chair of the Department of Marine Biology at the Faculty of Marine Sciences, in the presence of faculty members, researchers, students, and visitors. In his opening remarks, he emphasized that the initiative reflects the University's commitment to community service, connecting scientific research with public awareness, and fostering a culture of marine environmental conservation.

He explained that sharks are a key component of marine ecosystems and play an important role in maintaining their balance and health. He also noted that the initiative seeks to provide the public with reliable scientific information, helping to build knowledge-based awareness free from stereotypes and misconceptions.

The exhibition featured a range of preserved specimens and educational shark samples, along with informative displays, awareness lectures, interactive presentations, and educational activities for children and families. These activities were delivered by faculty members, researchers, and students from the Faculty of Marine Sciences, with the aim of making marine science more accessible and strengthening the community's connection with the marine environment.

The initiative organizers emphasized that its message is not to downplay the importance of following safety guidelines during marine activities, but rather to promote the understanding that caution should be guided by scientific knowledge and respect for wildlife. This approach contributes to protecting people while conserving marine life at the same time.

The initiative forms part of the Faculty of Marine Sciences' ongoing efforts at King Abdulaziz University to strengthen its role in community service, promote environmental awareness, support sustainability goals, and contribute to the conservation of the Red Sea's unique biodiversity, in alignment with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
