Therapeutics-II


 

Objectives:

This course is a continuation for therapeutics I, designed to provide the students with a basic introduction to the therapy of common disease states. Considerations and precautions in selections, dosing and monitoring of drugs used to treat commonly encountered pharmacotherapeutic problems.  Given a patient data base, students will learn how to evaluate, integrate, conceptualize in concise organized manner the patient's drug therapy at a competency level necessary for effective communication with other health professionals utilizing the concept of pharmaceutical care.

 

Contents:

This course will help the student to understand therapeutic concepts in the management of disease states through both formal lectures and structured case analysis discussions.  Topics include, PART I: Infectious diseases, Neurological disorders, Neoplastic disorders, Woman's health and geriatrics therapy. PART II: Including OVER the COUNTER therapeutics (OTC) such as; antacids, anti-diarrheas, hemorrhoids, analgesics, antipyretics/monitoring temperature/topical analgesics, cold, flu, allergy, otic disease, oral disorders, ophthalmic disease, contact lens care, contraception, nutritional products, infant formulas, diabetes care/monitoring devices, in home monitoring, dermatitis, diper rash, sunscreen/sunburn, foot care, sleep, weight loss, smoking aids.

 

Course Outcomes:

Consistent with the objectives, students demonstrate achievement through:

1.      demonstrated development of knowledge and understanding of the diseases and therapy

2.      competence in drug selection, monitoring therapeutic outcomes, management and recognition of drug interaction and adverse reaction

3.      ability to develop patient care plans
