OBJECTIVES:
Nutrition Support is intended to teach the students all aspects of nutrition starting with the required skills to perform nutritional assessment. Indications, contraindications, monitoring parameters for enteral and parenteral nutrition (TPN) support are included. This course focuses on composition of TPN and the required calculations for different ingredients including calories and fluids requirements to all age groups. Emphasis on TPN during different disease states, interpretation of all needed results, discontinuation of TPN as well as communication skills with patients and all different health care professionals.
CONTENTS:
Nutrition support is a course that encounters both Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition support. It covers all age groups including neonatal, pediatric and adult patients. This includes nutrition support screening and assessment techniques, initiating a Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) therapy and performing all the required calculations. Monitoring and follow up all patients receiving TPN therapy. Managing TPN complications and compatibility issues also included. The course covers how to manage TPN requirements during different disease states too.
COURSE OUTCOMES:
By the end of this course the student should be able to:
1. Perform nutritional assessment, evaluate the appropriateness of patient-specific nutritional requirements and modify therapy according to disease state.
2. Recommend appropriate calories, protein, fat, electrolytes, minerals, trace elements and multivitamins as per patient specific requirements
3. Performing all required daily calculation, TPN total osmolality, patient nitrogen balance status and the non-protein calorie to nitrogen ration.
4. Initiate, follow up and monitor a Neonatal, pediatric, and adult TPN orders as well as TPN during different disease states, including intradialytic & cyclic TPN
5. Communicate with pharmacy, medical & nursing staff for solving any problems regarding TPN
6. Educate patient and health care professional regarding nutrition support of patient's specific disease state and communicate all information pertinent to nutrition support in a clear, concise and organized manner.
