This course is designed to provide students with basic introduction to the therapy of common disease states. Considerations and precautions in selection, dosing and monitoring of drug used to treat commonly encountered pharmacotherapeutic problems. Given a patient database   students will learn how to evaluate, integrate and conceptualize in a concise organized manner the patient drug therapy at a competency level necessary for effective communication with other health professionals utilizing the concept of pharmaceutical care.

Contents:

This course will help the student understand therapeutic concept in the management of disease states through both formal lectures and structured case analysis discussions. Topics include, PART I: fluids and electrolytes ,acid-base disturbance, renal failure(acute, chronic/dialysis),anemia, hypertension, heart failure, coronary artery dialysis, myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, dyslipidemias, peripheral vascular disorders, thrombosis, intensive care therapeutic. 2.      To establish a systematic problem solving approach to the selection of appropriate therapeutic regimens based upon specific patient needs.

3.      To define therapeutic endpoints, monitoring parameters for efficacy and toxicity, duration of therapy, appropriate laboratory tests for differential diagnosis, and suggest alternative drug(s) whenever indicated.

4.      To select the drug of choice, other commonly used drugs for such condition, managing and monitoring adverse drug reactions; and handling the pharmacokinetics & pharmacoeconomic aspects of the selected drug(s).
