Director, Hematology Postgraduate program

Hematology Department

I was appointed Director of the Postgraduate Program by the Dean of Medical School in 2003. The postgraduate training program in hematology is acknowledged by the Royal College of London. I have organized four successful revision courses in clinical and diagnostic Hematology in collaboration with the Royal College. I supervise the resident’s training and organize structured teaching sessions, twice a week. I am also in charge of the training of rotating General Medicine residents. We host around 12- 14 residents per year from different programs and hospitals. I am also a member of the Post- Graduate Committee at the Medical School at KAU. Other responsibilities include postgraduate teaching. There are currently eight residents enrolled in the Hematology Program.

When I was appointed as a faculty member at the University I was given several responsibilities. The first is teaching the undergraduates: this includes teaching

4th, 5th and 6th year Medical School students. The teaching is either in the form of tutorials, lectures or case discussions. I also mark medical students’ assays in the final Hematology exams.

Consultant (Attending): Hematology Department,

            KAUH is a DGH with a capacity of 200 beds, serving an area population of

around 800, 000. The Department of Hematology includes 8 consultants, 8 residents. My job as a consultant entails several clinical and laboratory responsibilities. I run a weekly clinic, in which I see an average of 30 general hematology patients as well as hematological oncology cases. I attend the weekly rounds, in which all inpatients are presented and discussed. I am on- call at least 5 days a month. During this time I supervise the on- call resident and I manage all hematology inpatients. I also review all hematology consults.

I have been the Jeddah Hematology Club coordinator for four years. The club meets four times a year to discuss interesting hematological cases. It is attended by 30 hematologists on average.

 

Senior Registrar: Hematology Department,

              As a senior registrar I was responsible for all Hematology inpatients and Emergency Room admissions. I attended all Hematology clinics according to the assigned rota. I attended clinical Hematology rounds twice weekly. I presented many talks and tutorials and case presentations both within the department and nationally.

               My responsibilities at this stage included attending to inpatients on the clinical hematology floor or as day cases. I performed minor procedures like bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures and intra- thecal chemotherapy administration.

               I attended all hematology clinics according to the assigned Rota. During this period I passed my first part (diploma) of The membership of the Royal College of Pathologists in London. A year later I passed the 2nd (clinical) part of the MRCPath examination and became a Member of the Royal College.

The Hematology department at the Royal Infirmary has a comprehensive hematology setup. It caters for general Hematology, Hematology/Oncology and Hemophilia/ Thrombosis patients. In addition it also has a Bone Marrow Transplant unit in which about 50 transplants are performed yearly.

During my one year rotation at the Royal Infirmary, I obtained a limited registration and was attending all clinics with the consultants in-charge. I attended weekly clinical rounds, morphology meetings and teaching activities.

Addenbrookes Hospital,

Cambridge, UK

During my rotation at Addenbrookes Department of Hematology, I attended out- patient clinics with the consultants in charge and weekly clinical rounds. I

was involved in the Hemophilia unit and the Hematological Oncology service. I attended the morphology meetings and various other teaching activities.        

Intern :Cairo University Hospitals,   Cairo, Egypt  

              Cairo University Medical School Hospital is a huge teaching hospital with a bed capacity of 6,000. I attended a year of internship at the hospital and affiliated  

               institutions.  This included rotation through various departments with on- call and Emergency Room responsibilities. I worked under close supervision of Registrars and Consultants.
