Abstract : The Aluminum Company of Egypt (EGYPT¬ALUM) covers Egypt's needs of aluminum metal and its alloys and it also provides Egypt with about 180 million dollars through exporting its excess production. Aluminum and alloys are produced using different industrial operations. Calcined petroleum coke necessary for manufacturing anode paste is an essential input material for electrolysis of aluminum oxide to produce aluminum in the aluminum production cell. The calciner unit was established in 1985 with an annual production capacity of 120000 ton calcined coke. The unit had a conventional control system located in a control room inside" the calciner area, which caused many inconveniences because of the coke dust. The calciner upgrading project started in Jan. 1991 by EGYPT ALEM, the engineering division of EGYPT ALUM, in cooperation with the Science and Technology Cooperation program (STC), research staff from the Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University and Benha Higher Institute of Technology. The project objectives were defined as : " 5. Improving the efficiency of extraction of calcined coke. 2. Reducing the down times of the calciner sys¬tem. 3. Transfer of" the control room to a remote area far away from the heavy coke dust. 4. Development of Egyptian capabilities for design and implementation of modem process control systems. It was then decided to use computer-based process technology to achieve" the above objectives. The control system was designed and implemented, and was introduced into actual services in Jan. 1993. This paper deals with the architectural outlines of the control system. Section II describes the cal¬ciner system. Section ill describes the organization of the computer control system with emphasis on newly added features. Section IV reviews some of the results obtained from the system and section V is a conclusion and a suggestion for future work.
