Background: Analyzing the reasons for donor deferral could help maintain blood safety and availability, prevent unnecessary deferral of prospectively eligible donors, and introduce better recruitment plans.
Aim of the study: To provide an overview of blood donation, deferral rates, and causes at the King Abdulaziz University (KAU) hospital blood bank in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Methods: This retrospective study included blood donors between 2014 and 2019. Research data were collected from donor databases. All data were assessed for demographic information, reasons for donation, deferral type, and reason. The reasons for deferment included weight, vital signs, physical examinations, hemoglobin assessment, and donor history questionnaire.

Results: Over the study period, the number of donors increased (r = 0.581, P < 0.001), totaling 84,980. Donations were predominantly from male donors (92.9%), replacements (80.5%), and between the ages of 21 and 40 (70.3%). The number of successful donations increased significantly throughout the study (r = 0.928, P <0.001). Whereas 10,488 (12.3%) donors were deferred, mostly for temporary deferral (77.8%). The most common causes for deferral were of donors who traveled to a malaria-endemic country, medication, had malaria, or failed the physical examination, specifically, having high hemoglobin at the time of donation, followed by having low hemoglobin (21.9%, 19.1%, 16.7%, 12.9%, and 5.7%, respectively). The deferral was mostly found in male donors (93.9%), replacements (77.5%), and first-time donors (86.6%). Finally, female donors, donors of Saudi nationality, and repeat donors were around three times more likely to be temporarily deferred than their counterparts.
Conclusion: Our results showed several patterns describing the donor population that visited the KAU Hospital and could represent the general population in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. New guidelines should be implemented regarding these deferral reasons and possibly reevaluate the deferral time. Moreover, proper management and follow-up of temporarily deferred donors are required. |
