Abstract : The subject of this study is the Ottoman-French relations from (926 – 974 AH / 1520– 1566 AD) in the era of Sultan Suleiman Al-Qanuni. The study deals with the Ottoman conquest of the island of Rhodes in 928 AH / 1522 AD and its consequences on the progress of the Ottoman conquests in Europe. The study highlights the early Ottoman-French communications in 932 AH/ 1525 AD between Sultan Suleiman and the French King; Francois I, how it resulted in the Ottoman progress towards Hungary in 932 AH / 1526 AD and the consequence of this communication. Furthermore, it shows the consequences of the Ottoman conquests of Hungary. In addition, the study highlights the Ottoman-French Privilege treaty in 942 AH / 1536 AD and the reasons that led into holding it between the two parties. As a result, trade and economic relations between the two countries have grown rapidly between the two countries. Holding this treaty had a great resonance in the European West. The study also highlights the Ottoman’s stand on the Spanish threat located in North Africa. Likewise, it deals with the Ottoman-French cooperation in 950 AH/ 1543 AD against Spain and its progress. Moreover, the study tackles the Ottoman State’s stand on the French- Spanish treaty 951 AH/ 1544 AD. Such treaty turns to be an opportunity for the Ottoman to devote themselves to conquests especially after securing the strategic and important areas of North Africa from the Spanish threat. The study sheds lights on the effects of the Ottoman-French imminence after the death of king Francois I and his son Henry II, inheriting the throne. Henry II pursued his father’s policy in keeping good relations with the Ottoman state which led to holding an Ottoman- French treaty in 960 AH/1553 AD, to unite the marines activity against their mutual enemy Spain. The study comes to the conclusion that Spain succeeded in signing a cooperation treaty with France in 966AH/ 1599AD. The study proves that in spite of the changes in the Ottoman- French relations, the communications between the two parties maintained in the areas of trade and diplomatic representation which confirms the strength of relations between the two countries. The present study depends generally on accurate analysis of events.
