Abstract The interior and exterior measurements of the loading rates of dust, and mass concentrations and loading rates of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni) in settled surface dust were conducted weekly at eight different homes in an urban area (Haram) in Giza, Egypt, during the autumn of 2007. The average interior and exterior surface loading rates of dust at the investigated homes were 1.580 and 8.180 g/m2.week, respectively. The interior surface loading rates of dust in homes are affected by the age of home building, smoking habits and home location. The average interior surface mass concentrations of Pb, Cd and Ni in the eight homes were 311.18, 33.09 and 53.51 µg/gm, respectively. The interior/exterior (I/E) ratios of the surface mass concentration were 0.96 for Pb, 0.94 for Cd and 0.95 for Ni. The average interior surface loading rates of Pb, Cd and Ni were 533.17, 54.78 and 87.84 µg/m2.week, respectively. Based on Pb deposition measured inside the investigated homes, 18.75%, 77.09% and 47.91% of the surface Pb per area in non-smoking homes, smoking homes and all homes, respectively, exceed the US EPA and US HUD standard of 40 µg/feet2. Significant positive correlation coefficients were found between the surface mass concentrations of Pb, Cd and Ni and also between the surface loading rates of the three metals in the interior settled surface dust collected from all homes. The interior levels of the mass concentrations and loading rates of Pb in settled surface dust are affected by the age of home building, whereas the interior levels of Cd and Ni are not affected by the age of home building. Significantly higher levels of the surface mass concentrations of Pb, Cd and Ni were found in homes located on the main streets compared with homes located on the side streets. The average surface mass concentrations of Pb, Cd and Ni were 246.65, 25.27 and 39.80 µg/gm in non-smoking homes and 375.71, 40.92 and 67.23 µg/gm in smoking homes, respectively. The average of Pb, Cd and Ni surface loading rates were 292.24, 29.53 and 46.92 µg/m2.week in non-smoking homes and 773.14, 80.04 and 128.76 µg/m2.week in smoking homes, respectively.
