Abstract : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of functional electrical stimulation (FES) on quadriceps femoris muscle torque, range of active knee extension and functional ambulation in spastic cerebral palsied children. The present study included thirty hemiplegic patients, with age ranged from twelve to fifteen years. These patients were selected according to basic criteria: mild spasticity and ability to perform active knee extension against gravity in addition to absence of fixed knee contractures. Patients were divided randomly into two equal groups, study and control. The study group received a program of FES and traditional therapeutic exercises for the quadriceps femoris muscle, while the control group was exposed to the traditional method of treatment only. Treatment for both groups continued for 20 successive weeks, 3 times per week. Evaluation of quadriceps muscle torque, knee extension range of motion and grade of functional ambulation was carried before and after the suggested period of treatment. The results at the end of the treatment period indicated significant improvement in both groups, with an observed difference in favor of the study one. Such a difference may be attributed to the role of FES on facilitating voluntary motor control, which in turn reduces spasticity and improves range of knee motion. The benefits acquired from this study indicate the utilization of FES in the treatment of hemiplegia.
