Abstract : The current study aims to explore the relationship between the two variables: academic achievement and social capital. Recent studies have shown that academic achievement goes beyond material and human resources to include what is scientifically known as ‘social capital’, which is what the individual possesses of resources and assets to fulfill needs and attain goals by virtue of being a member of a group. To test this hypothesis, the researchers utilize descriptive social survey method through the use of survey questionnaire to sample about six hundreds and fifty three students from different scientific departments at King Abdulaziz University during the second semester of the academic year 1426 / 1427 Hijrah. The scale of social capital included several sub-scales: participation in local community; pro-activity in a social context; feelings of trust and safety; neighborhood connections; relatives and friends connections; tolerance of diversity; and value of life. Academic achievement is measured based on the student’s GPA. Study results come out to reflect often-statistically varied relationships between study variables. Namely, there are positive association between feelings of trust and safety and value of life and academic achievement. On the other hand, neighborhood connections and relatives and friends connections leads often to lower level of academic achievement. The study concludes by asserting the importance of increasing the degree individual’s social capital and calls for utilizing this resource at all social institutions.
