The emergence of the section:

The Library and Information Section of King Abdul Aziz University was founded in 1393 h./1973 to be the first academic department in this specialty at the level of Kingdom universities, and this section has a leading role in the specialized field of libraries and information, which is one of the important specialties in the world, especially in light of global interest in the information and its issues. This is accomplished by the graduation and the preparation of specialized technical cadres highly scientifically qualified to contribute to the improvement and development of information services through modern and scientific methods which will help to achieve development goals and needs of Saudi society.

Section objectives:

 The general objectives of the Section are to provide undergraduate students with the basic information necessary for librarians and information specialists. In the Masters stage, the department aims to provide students with advanced information that helps them to do research and development in various types of libraries and information centers, and then the two stages of education programs include the study of operations, the special problems of selection, supply, organization, analysis, formation, storage, conservation, research and retrieval, in different information services.

The objectives and the educational policy can be identified as follows:
1 - The preparation of specialists in libraries and information, equipped with skills that enable them to manage and develop those institutions and improve information services through modern teaching aids.
2 – To render a service to scientific research in the field of libraries and information and open new horizons for the development and optimization of the profession.
3 - Development of the capacity of university students on the use of libraries and information sources.
4 - To contribute to the community service through training and continuing education and awareness of the field of libraries and information and the importance of its study.

Plants of Section of libraries and information:

1 - Bibliographic Plant: - It was set up for the purposes of training postgraduate and undergraduate students where they get trained on the materials of descriptive and subject cataloging, classification, Bibliography and indexing.

2 - Automated Research Plant: - It is concerned with training students on modern equipment, direct contact with local and international banks of information, and automated indexing systems in the university libraries, and at the same time, it renders service to faculty members.

3 - Computer Center: - The Center was established to train undergraduate and graduate students on the applications of computers in libraries and information. It was taken into account that it had contained the latest devices in the area of information technology. At the current phase it is equipped with forty devices and servers and Data Show for explanation.

                                                                 
4 - Information Center: - It is concerned with compilation of intellectual production in the area of libraries and information and organizing the provision of the basic sources of information necessary for the researchers from the faculty members and graduate students at the college, and it is used at different times for training and teaching.
