KAU Holds Informative Meeting on Seismic Hazards

 

Under the Patronage of Prof Adnan Hamza Zahid, KAU Dean of Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research, the Geological Phenomena Studies Unit at KAU Faculty of Earth Sciences has organized on Tuesday 14th July 2009, corresponding to 21st Rajab 1430 an informative and consultative meeting to shed light on the university's activities to study the seismic and volcanic hazards of the volcanic lava fields.

The meeting, which was held at KAU Supreme Administration's premises, was opened with a documentary film about the university's achievements followed by a speech by Prof Adnan Hamza Zahid, KAU Dean of Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research.

Prof Zahid welcomed Eng Hani Zahran, Director of the National Center for Saudi Geological Survey, and Lieutenant Saeed Asiri, of the General Directorate of Civil Defence, who were among the audience.

In his speech, Prof Mohammed Rashad Moufti, Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, outlined the activities of the Geological Phenomena Studies Unit, stressing the importance of establishing cooperation between KAU and the Saudi Geological Survey in line with the memorandum of understanding concluded between the two parties a few weeks earlier.

He also maintained that the cooperation in conducting such studies would be in the pubic interest and of help to the project planners.

He also praised the accreditation of the faculty's first degree programmes by the Geological Society, UK.

He also added that the faculty was conducting some studies to investigate the subsurface of Al Madinah Al Munawwarah lava field to be able to identify the nature of the activity.  

Prof Talal Ali Mukhtar, Head of the Geological Phenomena Studies Unit, gave a presentation on the studies and researches on seismic and volcanic hazards carried out by the Faculty of Erath Sciences.

A project aiming at assessing and monitoring the volcanic and seismic activities and earth deformation in the northern part of Rahat lava field near Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah- also known as Al-Madinah Al Munawwarah lava field- and Al-Shaga lava field- also known as Louneir lava field.

The project is also aimed at conducting research studies on the early warning of natural disasters with the aim of minimizing their effects.

It was also unveiled that KAU was interested in having the Saudi Geological Survey, the General Directorate of Civil Defence and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology as partners in implementing the project.
