King Abdulaziz University signs an agreement with Politecnico di Milano for cooperation in the field of computing technologies

In the month of October 2021, the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, King Abdulaziz University (KAU) signed an agreement with the Politecnico di Milano Department of Electronics, Information, and Bioengineering for cooperation in the field of computing technologies with reference to research proposals, graduate thesis and dissertation work, as well as the assessment of research workshops and the mobility of involved researchers. This is part of a broader Memorandum of Understanding for research and education cooperation between KAU and Politecnico di Milano – the leading technical university in Italy and among the world top universities in the fields of architecture, industrial design and engineering according to international rankings.

Under the agreement, the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering of the Politecnico di Milano will act as reviewer for the doctoral and master's degree thesis proposals of students of the KAU University and workshops will be organized, in Saudi Arabia and in Italy, to exchange ideas and try to identify further forms of cooperation.

The statement of Professor Abdulrahman Alyoubi, President of the King Abdulaziz University: “King Abdulaziz University seeks to develop its capabilities and support academic, research, development, and training cooperation through fruitful international cooperation projects with international universities. This initiative follows the vision of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 2030, which confirmed the wise leadership’s generous support and tangible interest in employing international cooperation and investment in a knowledge-based economy as a strategic priority to enhance scientific research. It also envisages contributing to the development of the national economy and diversifying its resources. Through the agreement with Politecnico di Milano in Italy, we aim to enhance and develop the capabilities of our students and enrich their knowledge and research skills, especially in the computing fields required in today’s labor market. They include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, the Internet of things, and others. Furthermore, this collaboration will help to improve scientific and cognitive research among scholars and students.”

The Dean of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology (FCIT), Professor Iyad Katib, stated: “We look forward to our collaboration with the prestigious Politecnico di Milano and benefitting from the expertise available at the Italian university to enhance the quality of scientific research in our institution. Furthermore, we seek to improve the educational system of graduate studies, and we specifically aspire to obtain academic accreditations for all graduate study programs offered at our institution. From this point of view, this agreement will benefit us through the feedback on our research performance and holding joint workshops with Italy to develop students’ skills in emerging technologies, which have gained great significance in the Saudi workplace.”

The Politecnico di Milano Rector’s Delegate for International Relations, Professor Stefano Ronchi, stated: “In recent years, Politecnico di Milano has been constantly expanding its international network and outreach. In my view, the signing of this agreement confirms that our strategy of connecting with the best technological departments and universities in given world regions is the right one. In particular, with reference to engineering and technology, KAU is one of the most advanced university in the Middle East and Saudi Arabia is a rapidly evolving country that deserves high attention”. On the occasion of the online signing event of October 28, 2021, Professor Stefano Tubaro, Chair of the Politecnico di Milano Department of Electronics, Information, and Bioengineering (DEIB), stated: “This is an important first step in cooperation with our department. Computer Science is a key field in our department that has other specializations as well. I look forward to start working together and explore other possibilities for cooperation”. Professor Luciano Baresi, who is the faculty member in charge of the project at the Department of Electronics, Information, and Bioengineering, added: “This agreement is wide-ranging in terms of specialization and for this reason I involved the top experts in multiple fields in our Department. I am eager to start the cooperation, to deepen research and graduate student projects, to coordinate research exchange and workshops in Italy and Saudi Arabia”.

Professor Davide Ponzini, Rector's Delegate for International Relations with the Middle East at Politecnico di Milano, stated: "Early in 2020, I had the pleasure of welcoming, in person, one King Abdulaziz University delegation at Politecnico di Milano. The Memorandum of Understanding that the two universities signed in 2020 now shows its great potential with this agreement. I will keep working for this cooperation to thrive and for expanding it towards other fields of engineering, architecture, and design".
