Foundation stones for new branches of King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in north Jeddah, Khulais and Al-Kamil provinces were laid by Makkah Al-Mukarramah governor, HRH Prince Khalid Al-Faisal, on Tuesday May 28th, 2011.
Encompassing an area of 5.7 million square meters, the north jeddah campus in Asfan has twelve large buildings equipped with the latest technology to have a conducive atmosphere of learning and research in the areas of science, medicine, engineering, computing and information technology.
Plans are also afoot to offer a business programme shortly.
A total of one thousand students have so far been enrolled to read for degrees in a variety of disciplines in the new campus. The maximum intake targeted for the campus, however, is twenty-five thousand students.
The next phase will include the launch of another fifteen faculties, three female students' centers, a medical compound, staff and students' housing units, a sports city and an economic city.
A stone was also laid by Prince Al-Faisal to mark the founding of a new KAU campus in Al-Kamil province.
The new project is composed of a faculty of computing and information technology embracing four departments, a faculty of business comprising seven departments, an animal resources programme, an environmental sciences programme, in addition to a scientific research station at Jabal Shamansir.
A number of infrastructural projects aimed at improving the quality of life in the province were also inaugurated during the visit.
Prince Al-Faisal also attended a ceremony held in Khulais province to mark the launch of a new KAU campus there.
The project consists of a faculty of computing and information technology with four departments, a faculty of business with seven departments, a faculty of applied medical sciences with six departments, a translation programme at the English Department, a biotechnology programme at the Department of Biology, as well as a community service and continuing education unit.
Some other development projects were also launched by Prince Al-Faisal during the visit.
