Abstract |

"Faia}" (~) (singular of aflaj) is a canal system, which supply water for a
community of farmers for domestic and/or agricultural use. Comparable systems to
daudi afla} are qanats in Iran. Similar systems existed or still exist in many places
around the world. In those places, qanats are called by different names. However,
these names are at best variants of the original names used for qanats systems. It is
still unclear when and where qanats were first constructed in the world. Even with
odern methods of dating, such as radio-carbon (14C) dating, age of qanats is difficult
to estimate. In both Oman and Iran, qanats and afla} are located in dry area where the
annual rain fall is less than 200 mm y"1. In Oman, these systems are mostly located in
the northern part. In Iran qanats are located mainly in the central and eastern part of
the country. Oman has 4, I 12 faia} in which 3,108 are live aflaj. (c~I) They produce
approximately 680 x 106 m3 yea(1 out of which 410 x 106 m3 yea(1 are used to irrigate
about 26,500 hectares. Daudi aflaj represent 23% of the total number of afla} in
Oman. Out of approximately 50,000 qanats existed in Iran, 28,038 qanats are still
live producing approximately 9.1 x 109 m3 yea(l. In this paper history, administration,
nomenclature, structure, construction, water distribution and water use of daudi aflaj
of Oman and qanats of Iran will be compared.
