The aim of this research is to study “words of mental activity fields in
Arabic lexically and semantically, as well as to collect and classify the data
from the lexicon of Lisān al-ʻArab of Ibn Manẓūr in accordance with the
semantic field theory, exploring the semantic features, elucidating their origin,
contemporary usage and their development in terms of semantic extension or
reduction, capitalizing on modern linguistic semantic-analyzing theories.
The research is composed of a preface, an introduction, two chapters and
a conclusion. The introduction contains an overview on Ibn Manẓūr and his
book (Lisān Al-ʻArab). The first chapter is concerned with a theoretical
study consists of three elements: one of them is about semantics, its
development, causes and methods; while the second element is about two
semantic fields theories and analysis of semantic components, and the third
element defines and clarifies mental activity fields. The second chapter
concentrates on nine semantic fields of the classifications of the lexicon,
which are: Mind and mentality words, contemplation and thinking words,
knowledge and science words, perception and recollection words, attention
and attentiveness words, intelligence and prudence words, forbearance and
endurance words, dreams and imagination words, and belief, skepticism and
speculation words.
To study these words and vocabulary, the researcher utilized the
statistical, analytical and descriptive methodology.
Eventually, the study resulted in multiple findings, most significantly:
Arabic words and vocabulary of mental activity are very copious and abundant
which stemmed from sensory sources. Therefore, the researcher recommends
that much attention should be paid to semantic fields. |
