Subject : Text Linguistic Cohesion in the Holy Quran An Example of Sūrah Al-Rahman
Document Language : Arabic
Abstract : All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and Peace and bless-ings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions. The study aims to apply the text linguistic cohesion tools from both lexical and grammatical side on Sūrah Al-Rahman. The study consists of an introduction and two chapters. The introduction clari-fies the sentence for grammarians and polygons in the past and pre-sent, the difference between the grammar of the sentence and that of the text and the complementary relationship between them as both are inseparable in terms of reading and understanding the texts well. The introduction defines Sūrah Al-Rahman, its merit and relation with Sūrah Al-Qamar and Sūrah Al-Waqi'ah. Chapter One entitled "Lexical Cohesion" consists of two sec-tions. The first section handles the full, partial, and structural recur-rence as shown clearly in the surface and deep structure of the Sūrah through words and structures. The second section tackles the colloca-tion, whether through synonyms, oppositeness, or collocation. The oppositeness was most frequent in the text cohesion. The binary op-positions appear from the beginning of the Sūrah to its end. Sūrah, in general, addresses both mankind and the jinn and believers and dis-believers, and describes the heaven and hell. Chapter Two entitled "Grammatical Cohesion" defines the meaning of grammatical cohesion and consists of three sections. The first section talks about reference with all its kinds; endopheric and exopheric references. The second section tackles the deletion wheth-er a noun, sentence or letter. The third chapter defines the conjunc-tion and its tools, whether between words or sentences. The conjunc-tion in Sūrah Al-Rahman is confined to the use of the conjunction tools, "Waw" and "Faa", thus maintaining continuity and cohesion of the text and sentences so that the reader can understand the meaning of the text. Finally, the conclusion includes results and recommendations, mainly: The Holy Quran is a completed and integrated text in which the linguistic cohesion is evident. The successive Sūrahs are succes-sive sentences linked by the context. Each Sūrah is consistent with the preceding and subsequent Sūrah. The verses (ayahs) and sections are coherent in an exquisite harmony between the name and content of the Sūrah.
