KAU Marks International Nurses Day 2011 (IND)

Dr Adnan Al-Mazrooa, KAU Vice-President, stressed the important role of nursing in the healthcare system, calling nursing faculties and departments to lavish more attention on it.

"The purpose of this event is to join the world's celebrations of the International Nurses Day 2011 (IND)", he said in an event staged by the Department of Nursing, Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences, in celebration of the International Nurses Day 2011 (IND).

This year's theme is ‘Closing the gap: increasing access and equity’.

The event was attended by Dr Haytham A. Zakai, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences, Dr Mahmoud Al-Ahwal, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, in addition to vice-deans, teaching members of staff and students of the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences.

In his speech, Dr Zakai said that the great round-the-clock nursing care provided by the nursing staff all over the world contributes to the improvement of health services for both individuals and communities.

He also unveiled a new prize carrying the name of Rufaida Al-Aslamia to be awarded to the best scientific research on nursing.

Rufaida Al-Aslamia was the first Muslim nurse who lived during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). She is well-known in Islamic history for nursing in the battlefields.

"As the West celebrates Florence Nightingale, an English nurse who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing, we celebrate Rufaida Al-Aslamia, who went with the Prophet on many holy wars to treat the sick soldiers", he added.

According to Dr Shadia Yousuf, Head of Nursing Department, the scientific programme will shed light on the latest methods in teaching and practising the nursing profession, in addition to some other relevant topics.

During the event, souvenirs were presented to Dr Al-Mazrooa and Dr Zakai on the occasion by Dr Husna Banjar, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences.

Business Schema Trading Establishment and Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Al-Amoudi Center of Excellence in Breast Cancer, sponsors of the events, were also honoured by Dr Al-Mazrooa.
