About Me

Bachelors of Arts (first class with honours, 1.1) in Arabic Linguistics and Literature from King Abd al-Aziz University in Jeddah. My diploma in Psychology and Education is from the same university. During my undergraduate study, I was appointed to teach Arabic Language and Literature at al-Thaghr High School in Jeddah. I continued to teach at the institution after my graduation and then left to work in the King Abd al-Aziz University as an assistant professor in the department of Arabic Language, Linguistics and Literature.

In preparation for my M.A degree I studied at the University of California, Berkeley, but I completed the degree at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. This was done under the supervision of Professor Alexander Knysh and Professor Anton Shammas from the Department of Near Eastern Studies. The theme of this study was the journeys within classical literature. I also obtained a diploma in teaching Arabic as a second language from the same department under the supervision of Professor Raji Rammuny. During my time in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies I worked on developing a program of teaching Arabic as a second language using various different mediums. This has since become one of the leading programs in the U.S.A. I then moved to the United Kingdom to study for my PhD at the University of Manchester under the supervision of Dr. Philip Sadgrove as a first supervisor, Professor  John Healey and Dr. Ron Buckly as second advisers. My thesis is a research about journeys within the pre-Islamic and early-Islamic literature and the connection these have with the art of Maq«mas.

Presently, I am teaching Pre-Islamic Literature (al-Adab al-J«hil») as well as the literature of the Early Islamic Period (Adab ¶adr al-Islam) at the department of Arabic Language and Literature at the King Abdul Aziz University.
