Abstract
:
Zeolites have been applied widely on catalytic processes because their intricate micropores provide different types of shape selectivity1. However, their small pore size brings diffusion and mass transfer limitations, which can be solved by using zeolite nanocrystals or mesoporous zeolites. Since the use of zeolite nanocrystals will cause much higher pressure drops in packed-bed reactors and difficult recycles of catalysts, interests are focused on preparation of mesoporous zeolites. Generally, uniform mesopores in zeolite crystals are generated by adding soft2,3 or rigid4 templates into zeolite synthesis systems. Here, mesoporous ZSM-5 was prepared via a new template-free method. This method involves in-situ hydrothermal crystallization of the alumina-silica xerogel converted from uniform-sized sol particles by vacuum drying process. The obtained mesoporous ZSM-5 has micro-spherical morphology (Figure 1) and contains highly crystallized zeolite structures and bimodal mesopores (2.5±0.2nm, 11.7±3.1nm, Figure 2). Toluene-TPD and mesitylene-TPD results show that mesoporous ZSM-5 has obvious advantages over conventional micrometer-sized ZSM-5 in diffusion and mass transfer of organic molecules. The diffusion coefficient of toluene (or mesitylene) within the former is 2 (or 7) orders of magnitude higher than that within the latter.
