The Translation Unit

 

The Arab world has become more than ever in need of knowledge transfer, exchange of experience, acquaintance with the other and acquainting the other with the Arab- especially the Saudi- character and nature and the extent to which this nature contributes to the formulation of balanced exchange relations between nations. Many notable figures in the political, academic and cultural fields regarded this to be of great importance. Such fruitful introduction and open frontiers initiative –initiated by the Custodian of the two holy mosques in creating a prize carrying his name in the field of translation is nothing but a proof of the sincere intention to know and to be known in this world. In this respect, the unit will try to contribute to this national trend by trying to achieve a number of objectives which can be put as follows:


The Unit Objectives :

1. To translate scientific books and books on cultural issues from foreign languages to Arabic and vice-versa.

2. To translate documents and digital publications of the university.

3. To revise and edit materials translated by other translators for the university.

4. To obtain translation rights of distinctive and renowned books, buy their copyrights and publish them.

5. To support the University ’s efforts in knowledge transfer.

6. To organize lectures and short courses delivered by prominent scholars from international universities to update knowledge in the field of translation.

7. To support academic research specialized in translation in conferences and research gatherings.

8. To link Saudi translators with other Arab and non-Arab specialists in translation.

9. To set up a translation team at King Abdulaziz University from different academic disciplines and bridge their activities with their counterparts in other international educational institutions.

10. To provide a feasible study for the creation of a high institute for translation in King Abdulaziz University to specialize in qualifying translators in all branches of translation. (Written, spontaneous, multilingual and visual translation.
