CONDITIONS OF PROMOTION
In order to be promoted to Associate Professor, the candidate must fulfill the following conditions:
1. He must have served a minimum of four years as Assistant Professor at a Saudi university or any other accredited university, provided that at least one year of said service was at a Saudi university, but he is permitted to apply 6 months -at most- before completing the required period of service.
2. This research work must have been published or accepted for publication while the candidate was an Assistant Professor.
3. He must present the minimum amount of research work required for promotion to associate professor which is formed of four units published (at least 1 unit) or accepted for publication two of which –at least-should be singly authored.
The minimum research work to be submitted for promotion includes the following:
(A) Research published or accepted for publication in refereed scientific journals .At least two units of this item should be included in the minimum research work submitted for promotion
(B) Refereed research works submitted to conferences or specialised scientific symposia provided they are published in full, or accepted for publication. Only one such unit will be accepted.
(C) Refereed research, whether published or accepted for publication, by Specialised University Research centers.
(D) Refereed university textbooks and reference books. Only one unit is accepted.
(E) Refereed editions of rare books. Only one unit is accepted.
(F) Refereed translations of specialised books. Only one unit is accepted.
(G) Books and research works published by academic or scientific bodies approved by the Academic Council provided they have been refereed. Only one unit is accepted.
(H) Inventions and patents of creative products from patent offices approved by the Academic Council.
(I) Creative work in accordance with the rules set by the University council, Only one unit is accepted.
Research work submitted by a Faculty Member for promotion should be published or accepted for publication in more than one source of publications.
An academic work is regarded as:
One unit if it is entirely done by one individual and half a unit if two have done it. If the research was carried out by more than two individuals (collective), it will be regarded as a half unit for the principal author and a quarter unit for each of the others. If another collective work is considered for promotion, then it will count as a quarter unit for each author.
Evaluation for Promotion.
Faculty Members are evaluated for promotion on a basis of 100 points divided as follows:
60 points for Research work.
25 points for Teaching.
15 points for Service rendered to the university and the community.
The total points accumulated by the Faculty Member to be promoted to associate professor should not be less than 60. With a minimum of 35 points must come from research work, Promotion to the rank of Associate Professor is based on the majority vote of the three referees.
Promotion Procedures:
1. The candidate should submit an application to the relevant Departmental Council including the following :
q The academic file which includes statement of his teaching activities and statement of his. Activities for the community and university service.
q Five copies-at least-of the research work presented for promotion, along with pertinent explanatory details.
q Any further information supporting his application for promotion.
q Any further information or documents required by the Departmental College and Scientific Councils
2. The Departmental Council and the College Council ascertains that all the requirements for promotion have been satisfied, and then recommends at least eight specialised referees. And recommend the promotion to Scientific Council.
3. The Scientific Council reviews the application for promotion based on the recommendations of both the Departmental and the College Councils, and then takes the following steps :
i. Five referees are selected to evaluate the research work, selected from those who were nominated by the College Council or others, three of whom are primary referees, and the fourth and the fifth are reserve referees, in case of necessity. At least two of the three referees should be from outside the university. Referees for academic promotion should be of the rank of Professor. However, in the case of promotion to Associate Professor, one of the referees is permitted to be an Associate Professor
ii. The research work and relevant information regarding promotion is then sent, in confidence, to the referees, for evaluation in accordance with the forms prepared by the Scientific Council.
iii.
iv. A decision is then taken to promote or withhold promotion of the Faculty Member, after reviewing the referees’ reports and the academic file regarding the candidate’s activities in teaching and in the service of university and the community.

iv. Once the Council decides against promoting the staff member because of weakness in his research work, a decision is then taken regarding possible disqualification of some of the research units and detailing those, which may be presented a second time. Upon re-submission of an application for promotion, the candidate must submit one new research unit.
The research work required for promotion must not be taken from the candidate’s Master’s thesis or Ph.D. dissertation or from the researcher’s previous publications. If the Academic Council establishes that something has been taken from any of the three sources mentioned above, the candidate will not be permitted to apply again for promotion until a year has passed starting from the date of the relevant resolution of the Scientific Council.
A Faculty Member’s academic promotion takes effect from the date of the relevant resolution of the Scientific Council. His job promotion, on the other had, will come into effect from the date of the execute resolution, provided that there is a vacant post appropriate to the promotion concerned.
