LANE 101 - GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION 3 Units
Course Description:
Students in this course are first introduced to reading selections,
which are intellectually stimulating, but not beyond students’
lexical, grammatical, or syntactic competence. Students will be
dealing with carefully selected grammatical structures suitable for
beginners and intermediate levels. New lexical items (that can be
deduced from the context) will be introduced through reading
materials, and are recycled again and again to enable students to
grasp them properly. Reading skills such as skimming, scanning, and
deducing meaning from context are emphasized to help students
understand the structure and organization of each reading. After
completing the reading selections and exercises, students are
expected to have built a repertoire of vocabulary, grammar, and
ideas that could gradually enable them to practice their writing
skills.

3 Units
Course Description:
This course is an introduction to various strategies of fictional
and non-fictional narrative, and poetic and dramatic compositions.
Building on the basic literary and critical concepts and skills
acquired in LANE 108, our concern will be to move from simple to
more subtle and complex literary elements and linguistic skills. Its
main objective is to inform the students of the principles under
consideration and help them engage in imaginative and intellectual
interaction and dialogue with the literary text. Each section will
provide the students with an introduction to genre, and give brief
definitions of the critical concepts as well as the necessary
strategies for literary analysis. Such concepts and skills will be
utilized to help the students frame their thoughts into
argumentative and expository short essays forming preliminary
responses to literature.

Course Description:
The course is designed to introduce students to the writing process
and to provide a variety of activities to help them master a wide
range of necessary writing skills for a good composition. Students

guidance in using their new skills to generate and organize ideas
and to write, edit, and revise paragraphs of their own. At every
stage, students are encouraged to analyze and discuss the strategies
they are using, focusing on one skill at a time. By the end of this
course, students are expected to have acquired new writing skills
and be able to produce their own compositions.
